Defensive Driver Training (Light Vehicle)

DESCRIPTION By attending the Defensive Driver Training course you will learn to drive to prevent a collision/accident despite the incorrect actions of other road users, in all weather and road conditions.

COURSE CONTENT Module 1 - Theory

2 hours of theory supported by an audiovisual presentation to highlight the main causes of collisions.


Module 2 - In Vehicle Instruction

This 45-60 minute session puts the theory from module 1 into practice; this is individual instruction on the road in the candidates own road-worthy vehicle. Every student must drive with his own vehicle for the day. Thereafter a more intense practical accident avoidance program will be done in a safe and controlled environment.

In our Advanced Driver Training program, participants learn the following essential skills:

  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Tailgating drills
  • Steering control
  • Speed and Vision control
  • Spatial awareness / Backing up
  • Hazardous conditions
  • Decision making as a component of driving
  • Personal risk assessment
  • Proper hand placement and seating
  • Emergency braking (including ABS)
  • Lane change( Emergency)
  • Dealing with distractions
  • Making quick decisions
  • Collision Avoidance Training - IPDE System (Identify, Predict, Decide and Execute)
  • Anticipate and recognize potential hazards on the road
  • React in a manner which will mitigate the effects of such hazards
  • Take the right action to avoid an accident
  • Maintain control of your vehicle in potential skidding situations

We teach these skills through a series of planned driving exercises, supplemented by relatively brief classroom sessions.

Drivers learn the practical skills of braking and steering on loose surfaces as well as the importance of appropriate speed selection.

This one day program assists drivers to understand the adjustments required for safe motoring. The program is a mixture of theory and practical sessions concentrating on areas such as:

  • Assessing surfaces and terrain
  • Detecting hazards
  • Skid prevention
  • Importance of tyres and pressures
  • Preparing the vehicle
  • All relative vehicle checks (daily, weekly and monthly)

The program also allows drivers to analyse varying road situations by way of Workbook and PowerPoint photo display.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Copy of your valid driver license must be handed in before the training.
VALIDITY OF CERTIFICATE 1 Year – unless specified for 2 years.
PARTICIPANT PROFILE Must be 18 years of age.
Must have a valid driver license.
