DESCRIPTION The Backhoe/Loader (TLB) course is designed for both novice and experienced operators who may be expected to operate a TLB while performing their daily duties. A learner accredited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the functions of the TLB and the start-up, shutdown and operating procedures for the machine.

COURSE CONTENT
  • Introduction
    We explain what a TLB is, the TLB’s functions, list different types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and explain why PPE is so important.
  • TLB components
    We identify the different components, the external and internal components of a typical TLB engine, explain the difference between petrol and diesel engines, discuss how the following components function:- hydraulic system, electrical system, braking system, power train, cooling system, tyres, loader and excavator buckets.
  • Gauges and switches
    We explain the different types of gauges and switches.
  • TLB controls
    We explain why the operator’s compartment must be kept clean, neat and tidy, the function of the floor pedals, direction control function, steering control and the implementation of control functions.
  • TLB checks
    We list and explain why the operator must perform and complete different machine checks and explain how to stop, shut down and park the machine.
  • General TLB safety
    We explain who are responsible for the operator and machine’s safety and list general and site safety rules.
  • TLB operating techniques
    We explain how to perform all the basic TLB operations safely, list the different operating techniques, explain what the different engine smoke colors indicate, why intermittent revving is not desired and how to start a cold engine.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS The company and learners must meet the conditions of the training requirements before theory training can be given, as well as the following, applicable to Lift Truck practical assessment:
• Ensure pallets are available for the building of a test chicane, we will provide barrier/danger tape to cordon off the practical assessment area.
• Ensure sufficient space to accommodate the practical assessment area.
The learner must bring a copy of their ID.
VALIDITY OF CERTIFICATE 2 Years

FINAL EVALUATION

Theoretical Examination:
Summative and Formative evaluation.

Practical Examination:
Pre-start, start -up and close down checks to be performed as well as practical operation.

Issued with a certificate.

Issued with a tag.
PARTICIPANT PROFILE Must be 18 years of age.
